It’s fairly common for cats to hiss. In fact, it’s one of their signature traits! It is, however, a sign that you should keep an eye out for a definitely shouldn’t ignore.

Designed to intimidate, hissing is often a negative response, implying unsettlement or discomfort.

Pain

First and foremost, your cat will his if they’re experiencing pain or discomfort.

As a method of letting you know, it’s vital that you assess the situation at hand and ensure that you undertake the necessary steps to ensure that your cat doesn’t unnecessarily suffer.

Examine them yourself and, if the findings are inconclusive, take them to the vet as soon as possible.

Fear & Apprehension

Cats also hiss when they’re feeling afraid or unsettled, which could be caused by a variety of factors.

They could, for example, have a particular disliking towards a part of their routine or aspect of their daily life, whilst a change in surroundings or circumstance could also unsettle them.

If you suspect that your cat is experiencing anxiety, it’s important that you nurture them and make an effort to settle them down.

Aggression

Finally, aggression may cause a cat to hiss, which could be caused by a variety of factors.

Perhaps a combination of the above, cats will associate these feelings with a sense of frustration and seek to let it out on those closest to them.

Petting, for example, may induce aggressive tendencies, whilst territorial intrusion can also have a negative effect.

The key is to not blame the cat, but rather to consider what may be causing the behaviour and to make the necessary amendments.
