Hound Dog Breeds

The hounds were bred to hunt game by scent or sight. Beyond this, generalizations about hounds are tricky as they are quite a diverse collection.

Some use acute scenting powers to follow a trail. These shorter-legged hounds follow ground scent aided by their long pendulous ears that would trap the smells.

The longer-legged sighthounds were bred for the chase. The arched gait of the likes of the Greyhound, Deerhound, Wolfhound, and Whippet equipped them with great speed and their deep ribcage provided lung power to give them the speed and stamina needed to chase down their prey.

Some hounds share the distinct ability to produce a unique sound known as baying. You'd best sample this sound before you decide to get a hound of your own to be sure it's your cup of tea
