Gundog Breeds
Known for their superior instincts in water and woods, many of these breeds enjoy hunting and other field activities. Gundogs were another group bred to help put food on the table with varying functions in the field.
Many of them, especially the water-retrieving breeds, have well-insulated water-repellant coats, which are quite resilient to the elements.
There are four basic types of Sporting dogs; spaniels, pointers, setters, and retrievers.
The spaniels, with the shortest legs of the gundog breeds, were used to go into the undergrowth and thick cover to flush out game.
The setters and pointers are longer-legged and faster, so could cover a lot of ground and then mark the whereabouts of the game by going on 'set' or 'point'.
All gundogs were bred to hunt, and are intelligent and energetic, so do need plenty of exercise and stimulation
