Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese Water Dog is a breed of working dog that originated in Portugal.

Bred to assist fishermen, these dogs are strong swimmers and have a thick, waterproof coat.

They were used to herd fish into nets, retrieve lost tackle or broken nets, and act as couriers from ship to shore.

The breed nearly became extinct in the early 20th century, but was saved by a few dedicated breeders.

Today, the Portuguese Water Dog is a popular companion and family pet, known for its intelligence, loyalty, and playful nature.

They are also still used as working dogs, often in search and rescue, water therapy, and assistance roles.

With their webbed feet, strong swimming ability, and love of water, Portuguese Water Dogs make excellent swimmers and divers.

They are also highly trainable and excel in obedience, agility, and other canine sports.

The Portuguese Water Dog is a loyal and devoted companion, making them an ideal choice for active families.
