Summary
While the Cat Mate ticks all the boxes for a basic microchip cat flap, especially for those with larger cats, it does not feel as well engineered as some competitors.
It is also only compatible with 15 digit microchips, so while it is OK, we would look elsewhere first.
Pros
- Larger than most, so good for larger cats
- Rotary 4-Way lock gives complete control over your cat’s access to and from the house
- Can also be used with RFID tags
Cons
- Only works with 15 digit ISO microchips
- Does not unlock quickly, which can be a problem for cats trying to escape other animals
- Quite a noisy latching mechanism
- Not great draft-proofing
- Dated styling compared to competitors
Full Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap Review
The Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap is a basic microchip catflap that only works with 15 digit microchip codes or an I.D disc.
It boasts an LED system that flashes when a cat has been registered successfully with the flap, and you can register a maximum of 30 pets with this product. This eliminates the frustration and stress caused by the intrusion of a neighbourhood or feral cat, providing a secure environment for all your cats.
There is a lot of hype about the Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap, so we have decided to review it and see if this cat flap is worth the money.
Key Features
- Registers a maximum of 30 cats
- Only compatible with 15 digit microchip codes
- Easy to programme
- Requires 4 AA batteries which will last for about 12 months
- The cat flap can even be fitted to glass panels or walls using the adapter kit
- Rotary 4-way lock system
Design
The Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap is designed to provide ample space for cats to come and go out of the house comfortably. It can be accommodated in wooden doors up to 80 mm thick. If you have a thick door, then the Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap is a great choice.
Dimensions
The Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap measures 246 mm x 197 mm, which makes it one of the biggest cat flaps available in the market. It is noticeably larger than the SUrreflap range and should easily cater for small dogs and large cats.
Draught Proof
The Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap should be one of the best draught-proof cat flaps available in the market thanks to its brush-sealed flap and magnetic lock. However, it has a habit of not lining up properly as it shut. This also caused the catch to whir and click periodically as it tried to sort itself out.
Rotary 4-Way Lock
The rotary 4-way lock is easy to use, and it gives you great control over your cat’s entry and exit. You can lock the Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap in four ways:
- Allow entry but no exit
- Allow exit but no entry
- Allow both entry and exit
- Completely locked
You can choose the allow entry but no exit setting if your cat is outside and you want to bring it in and keep it in. The allow exit but no entry setting is ideal when you want to keep your cat outside for some time. Allow both entry and exit feature can be used when you want your cat to come and go out of the home as they please.
If you don’t want your cat to leave the house, you could use the completely locked setting. This option comes in handy at night or when you have to take your cat to the vet.
Door Types Supported
The Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap can be installed on all types of doors from metal to wood. Not only that, but you can even fit it through walls and glass panels. However, you’ll need a 361 adaptor kit for glass and wall installations, and that must be bought separately.
Cat Registration
You might not have 30 cats right now, but there are some people who actually have this many cats. The Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap is a good option for them as it can register a maximum of 30 cats.
This gives more leeway than the Pet Mate Cat Mate Elite, for example, which can only register a maximum of nine cats.
Battery
4 AA batteries are used to power the Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap, and if only two cats are using the flap, it’ll last for about 12 months. When the batteries need to be replaced, the LED indicator on the cat flap will flash every 30 seconds.
Final Verdict
The Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap is a basic version of the Elite Microchip Cat Flap by Pet Mate. It doesn’t boast an LCD screen and timer control but has a 4-way rotary lock system to give you complete control over your cat’s entry and exit.
If you need basic features in a cat flap, the Pet Mate Cat Mate Microchip Cat Flap is a good option, but not the best microchip cat flap in our opinion.
