The Portuguese Government has approved a proposal to protect pets against animal cruelty. Once the law has been fully approved, anyone who performs an act of cruelty against a pet will be fined and may end up in prison for up to two years. Portugal is now following the footsteps of countries such as Australia, Italy and the United Kingdom, where imprisonment and fines can be issued if acts of animal cruelty are brought to the attention of animal law enforcers. The United Kingdom was the first nation to implement animal cruelty laws in 1822 and in 2007  The Animal Welfare came into force in England and Wales.

A vet in Castletown has found a ball inside the stomach of a 10 year-old Border Terrier called Trixie, after she swallowed it  two years ago! Melanie Pounder took Trixie to the vet two years ago after she swallowed a ball, but no traces of the ball were found at the time. A recent X-ray revealed a strange object lodged in her abdomen and exploratory surgery revealed it was in fact the bouncy ball she ate two years ago. The tailster team is unsure as to how they have aged the ball at 2 years.

“I’m now very careful about which toys Trixie plays with and I make sure she only has ones that are too big to swallow.” – says owner Melanie.
