With daylight saving plunging your evening walks into darkness, we have a few suggestions on how to stay safe during those chilly winter walks…
#1 Make sure you can be seen…
One of the most important things you can do is make sure you’re as visible as possible. The options are endless, but our top choice would be the reflective vests from Proviz that you can buy for you… AND your dog… (we’ve got 15% off for you… see below). A headlight might not be the fashion statement of the year, but it definitely helps you and your pooch find the way in the dark. If a headlight isn’t for you, you can always go with a light-up collar or a light up lead instead. Want to have some fun in the park? Take a light-up toy with you… yeah… those exist!
#2 Keep your dog on a lead
No matter how reliable your dog is with their recall, your night time walk is not the time to put this to the test. Your dog is far more likely to get spooked in the dark and adding a night time search party to the equation doesn’t sound like fun! Dogs have been known to cover surprisingly long distances when lost, so even if you’re walking in a traffic free area, it’s better to have piece of mind than risk an accident.
#3 – Take the road MOST travelled
Keep the exploring to daylight hours and stick with the route you and your pup know best. The path you take should be one you know like the back of your hand to ensure you don’t get lost. Always make sure to take your phone with you, just in case you do get lost! Technology is extremely helpful and a handheld GPS can be a lifesaver.
#4 – Longer walks during the day or the weekend
It might be an idea to give your dog a longer walk during the day so the evening walks are more about doing their ‘business’ than doing a lot of exercise. Burn off that extra energy on their lunchtime walk to save yourself from feeling unsafe on evening walks. Alternatively, weekends can be used to explore new routes and give your pet the exercise they really need. Don’t have the extra time? Try out a Tailster dog walker for the days you can’t do!
