Dogs Descend On Parliament To Demand Second Brexit Referendum

We see our dogs as extensions of ourselves, sharing our lives with us and (hopefully) championing us in everything that we do.

If they could speak, they’d probably sound just like us – echoing our exact thoughts and concurring with everything that we say.

As such, we like to imagine that they’d be riled up by the same things that get us going, and it looks like one group of dog owners is set to use their pooches to make a point…

Thousands of dogs are to descend on Parliament as activists fear that the pet passport scheme that allows  dogs to travel within the EU will be suspended if there is a no-deal Brexit.

The current passport scheme allows more than 250,000 animals each year to travel with their owners to the continent, enabling free movement within the EU.

The EU is currently a major source of animals and veterinarians in the UK. Around half the vets that begin work in the UK each year are from the EU, totalling approximately 25% of British vets.

The pro-EU dog owners will demand a fresh Brexit poll when they demonstrate outside of Parliament on October 7, in an effort to combat the potential changes.

Speaking of the dogs’ so-called ‘wooferendum’, organiser Dominic Dyer has said:

“We know Brexit will be disastrous for the people of Britain but it could also be equally bad for our pets.

From a shortage of skilled vets and vet nurses, to rising costs for animal health and pet food products and even the end of the EU pet passport scheme, Brexit will be disastrous for the nations dogs and cats and other companion animals.

If Brexit causes another recession on the scale of the financial crash of 2008, we can expect to see plunging living standards, forcing many people to give up their pets, leaving charities and shelters struggling to cope with the influx of animals in need of new homes.”

We all knew that Brexit would have widespread consequences but, with pets being a major part of everything we do in our lives, we hope that a deal can be reached that will accommodate both them and their needs within the UK.
