Columbian Drug Gang Place $7000 Bounty On Service Dog

A Columbian drug gang has placed a $7000 Bounty on a US sniffer dog with a track record of exposing more that 2000 kilos of cocaine hidden in suitcases, boats and shipments of fruit.

Sombra, the six year old German Shepherd, has been a main staple of the Colombian police force for several years and is renowned amongst underground organisations.

Soon to overtake records of existing cocaine interdictions, she has become a target of the Gulf Clan, a cartel that has offered a reward of $7000 to whoever kills or captures the talented pup.

Since the threat came to light, Sombra has been relocated from a busy port on Colombia’s Caribbean coast to the capital city, where she now uses her abilities to sniff through cargo at Bogota’s El Dorado International Airport.

After finishing her six hour shifts, Sombra is transported in a van with tinted windows back to her kennel, accompanied by two armed guards.

What Does A Day In The Life Of A Sniffer Dog Look Like?

Sombra typically wakes up around 6am and is taken straight to work at El Dorado airport. Aside from her neon reflective vest, she looks more like an old family pet than a fierce police dog.

Since starting work at the airport in January, she has sniffed out thousands of pounds of cocaine buried in the depths of cases and cargo. She also detected 77 kilos of cocaine buried deep in an industrial machine.

In Colombia, this type of work is risky. Police estimate that they’ve lost at least 1800 officers in the last two decades, along with a significant number of police dogs. Hit-men are the cause of many of the deaths, with attacks and bombings also responsible.

Sombra’s victories have led to her basking in the media’s spotlight, with fans often approaching her whilst on duty for selfies.

Speaking of Sombra’s work, Jose Rojas said of the dog:

“We are responsible for her safety.

Her sense of smell is far beyond that of other dogs.

Sombra, in comparison to other dogs, is much easier to work with. She understands orders.”

He reiterated that she has not let stardom go to her head and remains focused on her work, with authorities doing everything in their power to protect her.
