Savannah

The Savannah breed is the most expensive cat breed in the world, with some selling for more than £20,000! They are so expensive because of their rare genes. The Savannah cat is a hybrid between a domestic cat and an African Serval. Those that are first generation hybrids sell at the highest price.

Bengal

The Bengal is an incredibly beautiful breed, and another hybrid, this time between the domestic feline and an Asian Snow Leopard. Bengals have stunning markings, and generally a gentle temperament, making them an ideal pet. The most expensive Bengals can sell for around £10,000, but usually cost between £600 – £1500.

Maine Coon

A personal favourite, the Maine Coon is one of the largest and fluffiest cat breeds. Originating from Maine, this cat breed has become one of the most popular breeds around the world. Sometimes referred to as the ‘gentle giant’, a pedigree Maine Coon can sell from anything between £500 – £1000.

Persian

Persian cats are another fluffy favourite, and have a distinctive round face and short muzzle. They are a very popular and beautiful cat breed, and have a gentle nature. In the UK, you could spend between £500 – £1200 on a Persian cat. Persian cats originate from Iran and have been documented as far back as the early 1600’s.

Peterbald

The Peterbald was first introduced in Russia in 1993, making it a very new cat breed. They are very distinctive as they have large ears and no hair. Sometimes the Peterbald might be mistaken for the better known Sphynx cat, but the Peterbald is actually closely related to the Oriental Shorthair. Since Peterbalds are still relatively new, you could end up paying over £1000 for this rare cat breed.

Russian Blue

Russian Blues are a rather mesmerizing breed, with their characteristic blue/grey soft coat. They could be argued to be one of the best looking cat breeds, and also have a fun and curious personality. They also love human company, and are known to become close to one family member in particular. In the UK, Russian Blues can range from £500-£1000.

Sphynx

The Sphynx cat has already been mentioned in this list as having similar physical traits to the Peterbald. Sphynx cats are another hairless breed that was first produced in the 1960’s. Sphynx cats are popular due to their lack of hair, however they do tend to get quite oily so need frequent baths. Sphynx cats can cost between £600-£1200, depending on the breeder.

British Shorthair

One of the most popular breeds in the UK is the British Shorthair. British Shorthairs often have a thick ‘British Blue’ coat and piercing copper eyes, making them another extremely attractive breed. The breed is known for having a relatively calm temperament, making them an ideal family cat. British Shorthairs cost between £250-£900.

Other pricey breeds include the Scottish Fold, American Curl, Ragdoll and Siberian. Who knew something so cute could cost so much!
