How Much Exercise Does Your Dog Really Need?

Here at Tailster we know how important daily exercise is for our dogs. But do we know exactly how often and how much exercise they really need?

What are the main benefits of exercise for dogs?

  • Reduction in boredom and behaviors that sit alongside being bored
  • Improved mental health
  • Improved physical health
  • Something fun to break up the day

PUPPIES, how much exercise do they need?

Puppies are full of energy but get tired very, very quickly so short bursts of exercise are best for them. They usually initiate their own exercise by playing and then tiring themselves out again so this is great to start off. They need a few of these short bursts of energy every day until they get a little older. If you own or have owned a puppy you know that they will just drop anywhere and go to sleep of their own accord (even in the middle of play)

They can safely have a five minute walk for every month of their life, twice a day.

How can we help with that here at Tailster?

If you need pet care for your puppy, it’s probably a good idea to start with one of our dog sitters. They would be able to come in and spend time with your puppy and play with them during the day in order for them to get the daily exercise they need. As they get older this could alternate and perhaps become short walks twice a day.

ADULT DOGS, how much exercise do they need?

In regards to adult dogs and how much exercise they need, it really depends on what kind of breed they are and how active they are.

For example, active breeds like gundogs, terriers, retrievers, hounds etc, need a minimum of about 60-90 minutes of exercise a day.

Whereas less active breeds like large breeds, toys/miniatures, and more flat faced dogs need around about 30-60 minutes of exercise per day.

You can usually tell when your dog is getting tired and know when to start that walk home or back to the car.

How can we help with that here at Tailster?

We have dog walkers all over the UK that can come to your house when you’re at work or at an event and take your dog out for the agreed on time to make sure they’re getting the correct amount of exercise each day.

Most of our walkers charge per half hour or hour depending on the length of walks you need so you can agree on how many walks a day and at what length you want for your pooch.

You will also benefit from our tracking so you actually know the dog has been out for the length of time you required, and where they went!

ELDERLY DOGS, how much exercise do they need?

Elderly dogs still need exercise but this needs to be a lot more subdued. This can be a few different occasions in a day that make up about 30-60 minutes of activity.

Obviously when you know your own dog, you know their ability and when they need to have a rest so go by what they’re telling you too.

How can we help with that here at Tailster?

Like we said previously, we have lots of dog walkers all over the UK for all your walking needs. Perhaps when you have an elderly dog, someone popping in during the day to give them a bit of company and some short, regular exercise would be a better option.
