Cat Who Saved Owner’s Life Posthumously Named ‘Cat Of The Year’

Cat’s are subjected to a lot of unfair criticism, largely due to their independent nature and tendency to air on the side of caution when they’re in the company of humans that they don’t necessarily know.

They are, however, incredibly loyal creatures, which is something that should be celebrated in one of Britain’s favourite pets

Theo the cat has been posthumously awarded the title of ‘Cat of the Year’ after saving his owner’s life when she suffered a blood clot episode.

Paramedics said that Theo helped to save the life of his owner, Charlotte Dixon, after she suffered from a blood clot.

Theo spent the night pawing at her body to stop her from falling asleep as he sensed her deteriorating state.

After being taken to hospital, Miss. Dixon was advised by doctors advised that, had the cat not kept her awake, she would likely have not survived the night.

Describing how Theo saved her life, Miss. Dixon said:

“Theo wouldn’t let me [sleep] and was behaving very strangely and out of character,” she said.

He kept batting me with his paw, meowing and jumping on me – keeping me awake. Eventually I decided to call my mum and she called an ambulance.

The paramedic recognised the signs of a blood clot straight away and said it was a good thing I hadn’t fallen asleep as I probably wouldn’t have woken up.”

After spending a week in a high dependency unit, Miss. Dixon eventually recovered to full health – an outcome that would have been unlikely had Theo not intervened.

Theo was awarded a prize in a separate, public-voted category at the Cats Protection annual National Cats Awards, before being selected by a panel of judges for the top prize.

Speaking of her bittersweet feelings of losing her cat before he won the award, Miss Dixon said:

“I’m devastated that he’s gone but I’m so proud of him for winning. It shows I’m not the only one who thinks he was a really special cat.”

She accepted the award on Theo’s behalf at a ceremony held in London last month.
